Character-a-Day: Melvin Vimm, teaches English at a Catholic girls' middle school, in his free time reads French novels about the futility of human existence, harbors literary aspirations but fears failure, is an enthusiastic and gifted gardener (though he disparages his talents), has never met the right woman, though he will do so next spring while admiring the hydrangeas at the botanical garden.

I think he looks more like a detective. Perhaps Arnold although a last name does not come to mind. He does look like a lady in his life might cheer him up, however.

  2. Oh, wait, yeah, you're right. He's totally a detective.

  3. You very nearly described Johnny Wheelwright from John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany. Creepy.

  4. Hmm, I read that book twenty-and-change years ago. Don't consciously remember anything about Mr. Wheelwright, but perhaps he left an impression.
