How much would those would wood details cost today? (How many people now even know how to make that stuff?) But they still grace many anonymous old houses in many obscure corners of our city.
Some of the slaves in New Orleans were very fine woodworkers. I wonder if they had something to do with the ammount of wood detail on otherwise ordinary houses.
these guys do it pretty well. but you're right, the cost is insane. it is truly amazing that modest houses for working folks were ever built so well.

ReplyDeleteGiven that the ornate exterior woodwork of the Victorian era (1870s-1900s) post-dated slavery, I doubt very much that it did.
ReplyDeleteThere are, however, many examples of the work of highly skilled, enslaved craftsmen in antebellum houses.
just to have that shadow!
ReplyDeleteYeah, that shadow is amazingly cool.
