chopper city
These houses are these houses—a little over a year ago. Perhaps an entire series of R.I.P. graffiti on dilapidated house fronts? (And other graffiti of note: "chopper city""chopper" as synonym for machine gun/assault rifle has come up here before.)

  1. Hi, I've been reading your blog for several months. I spent a week in NOLA in March, and I'm going back for the month of January (to do an oral history project w/ the Episcopal Diocese of LA).

What do you know about houses like this one? I took the pic standing on top of a levee, somewhere around the 9th Ward.

I've been curious about it, and noticed your house series. Thanks!

  2. Seeing those houses renovated makes me happy.

  3. Yes, the steamboat houses. They're amazing. You can read about them here. (A friend of mine is a family descendant and lived in one of them for several years.)

  4. Fascinating! Thank you.

Slimbolala, who is your friend who lived in the steamboat houses? The reason I ask is that I am the son of Don Gagnon, who owns one of the houses, and Doullut is my great, great grandfather. We lived in the house from '90-'95. you can email me at
